Understanding Viruses Teri Shors 9781284025927 Books Reviews
- Me
Retired, with a PhD in Virology, but did most of my work in bioinformatics.
Summary
Extremely good book. I would highly recommend it overall.
Pros
1. The overall explanation of all topics is very well presented.
2. The bibliographic material is worth the book alone. I as particularly
impressed with the links to other sites for more information on a
whole host of topics. Some of them I didn't even know existed.
3. The historical perspective of many of the viruses discussed was of
particular interest.
4. The online material was good, but I wouldn't classify it as great.
5. The information contained included information on recent viruses
such as Zika and Ebola.
Cons
1. I have a particular dislike for any book that uses a term before the
term is actually defined. This happens in many places in the book.
That might be just picky on my part, so ignore it if it doesn't
bother you.
2. I do believe that having SOME knowledge of molecular biology at a
basic level would be advantageous to the reader, otherwise, I could
see a novice getting a bit overwhelmed.
3. There was no dedicated chapter on immunology. Given how virology
and immunology is so intertwined, I expected this, unless the reader
is expected to have knowledge beforehand. At least, that's how I was
taught.
4. Ever read Fields Virology or Clinical Virology by Richman? In either
case, the structural virology for each virus is fairly daunting in
most cases. Imagine this information 'condensed'. That's how this is
presented in this book. In some cases, it makes for a difficult read.
Overall
Even with the cons above, I would highly recommend this book. The pros
totally outweigh the cons and I actually enjoyed the presentation. - One of the best presented books on the subject of virses I've ever read.
- All clinically pertinent viruses were in the book. I got it slightly beat up and with some notes in it (could be helpful).
- Great shape!
- I enjoyed reading this book! Very easy to follow.
