In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

At age 10 Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory.

Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late 60s, and the transformative new voice of Saturday Night Live in the 70s.

"Disclaimer: I LOVE Steve Martin. I read this expecting to love it and was not disappointed. It was even more than I expected. A private man courageously opens up about his origins, including his troubled family relationships. He shares his magician techniques (to a point), notes on comic performances, BUNCHES of other insightful stuff. It is a fascinating exploration that he refers to as a biography rather than an autobiography for reasons that you will understand once you read it--and please do. A personal note--I saw him in an arena setting when I was a teenager and had no idea that he'd reached a point in his standup career that was not...rewarding. I'm still grateful that I got to see him in his standup career."

Born Standing Up A Comic Life Audible Audio Edition Steve Martin Simon Schuster Audio Books Reviews

  • I can hardly believe it’s been two years since I purchased this book and just now read it! Life takes us on a strange journey sometimes when we think we have found our calling (mine being comedy), yet life had different plans. I had been doing Hospice care as a volunteer for a few years when I took a break, thinking this will be my time to learn comedy again! Well, my sister became deathly ill and needed three brain surgeries so I was back doing bedside service…I’m not complaining at all, in fact, I’m greatly appreciative that I wasn’t working at the time so I could help her. I’m now taking a Master Class on Comedy, by Steve Martin, which reminded me of this book. So I read it!

What does this have to do with Steve Martin’s book? Comedy is born out of life’s tragedies and trauma’s; they force us to become stronger and more resilient, and over time - look at things - in a sometimes disturbing humorous light.

Steve’s book was enlightening and uplifting, from learning about his triumphs and struggles- in all that he endured to become the comic, and man he is today. I admire him greatly! The biggest obstacle and accomplishment when reading this, and I’d think he’d agree, was after obtaining a certain amount of respect, fame, and fortune, and having written “Lapin Agile” a play set in 1905 about the hypothetical meeting of Picasso and Einstein – Steve returned home. He earned the respect of love of his father, and basked in the love of his mother and sister; taking delight in their stories of forgotten anecdotes. There isn’t any greater gift in life than that!

If you desire to be a comic/entertainer I highly recommend reading this book. It will not only inspire you, but offer you an introspective look at what and why you wish to be a comic. Comedy is a journey - such is life, and what better way to view it than in this humorous biography, “Born Standing Up.”
  • There are few people out there who have not heard of Steve Martin. Many know him from his famous movies or appearances on Saturday Night Live. Born Standing up is the story of Martin’s previous life as a standup comedian. He tells the story of growing up working at magic shops, performing skits at empty bars, and running out of money not once, but several times.

I leave a 3-star review mainly because I felt that I was left with a lot of unanswered questions. The book is quite short for a memoir and at the end, I felt that I was just getting started. Martin tells the story of his childhood and the early years of his standup career well, but I personally feel like this book is an unfinished product. It felt as if there were intentions to write a comprehensive memoir at some point, but the publishing deadline arrived and the book was shipped as is.

Despite my critical review, I would say the book is fully worth the read. It is one of those books you have to sit down and digest all at once and enjoy entering the mind of the man who invented an entirely new version of standup comedy.
  • Steve Martin doesn't really give us an autobiography — engaging in the public soul searching and detailed exposition of oneself that makes a good autobiography is not in his character. He's much too private a person (at least that much of his personality comes across in this book). Instead, he gives us an overview of how he became famous, what he became famous for, and his reactions to both. There is some introspection, and enough personal reflection to connect us to Steve ... Martin ... but not a whole lot of detail. The question is, do we really need more? The author's goal for this book wasn't to tell his life story; it was to tell his early career story, which, to be sure, is impossible without some of the other stuff. Overall, I think, he gives us just enough of the personal to understand the professional, and enough of the professional to see how he got so famous. He doesn't deal with his career in movies, or his other accomplishments. It is strictly about his emergence as the biggest name in stand-up comedy. It is, therefore, an easy, gentle, reassuring read, bound to please his biggest fans, like me, and, yet, leave them wanting more. That's show biz for you.
  • This book has been recommended over and over again by entrepreneurs and creators lately, so added to the pile by recommending it on my book recommendations email list. I had always thought Steve Martin was at least mildly funny, but didn't think about him beyond that. This book is a great story of a creator's journey, and it was interesting peer into the history of the beginnings of stadium-filling comedy shows.

Steve Martin set records filling stadiums for comedy shows. Before that, he was an opening act at concerts. Before that, like many comedians, he struggled, doing five shows a day for twelve years. He gives insights into how family dynamics drove him into his craft, and what it was like to discover his unique creative voice.

It's well-written, which is something I'm especially appreciative of lately. I recently read a book by another comic that was poorly-written. I finished it because I was interested in that person's story, but the stink crept into my own writing, and it took a few days of practice to shake it.
  • Disclaimer I LOVE Steve Martin. I'm still grateful that I got to see him in his standup career.

Immerse yourself in monster lore in this supplement for the world’s greatest roleplaying game

This is NOT just another Monster Manual! Volo’s Guide to Monsters provides something exciting for players and Dungeon Masters everywhere.
· A deep dive into the lore behind some of DD’s most popular and iconic monsters
· Dozens of monsters new to the fifth edition to include in your epic adventures
· New playable races to allow you to build characters to fit nearly any type of story in your DD game.

The esteemed loremaster Volothamp Geddarm is back and he’s written a fantastical dissertation, covering some of the most iconic monsters in the Forgotten Realms. Unfortunately, the Sage of Shadowdale himself, Elminster, doesn’t believe Volo gets some of the important details quite right. Don’t miss out as Volo and Elminster square off (academically speaking of course) to illuminate the uninitiated on creatures both common and obscure. Uncover the machinations of the mysterious Kraken Society, what is the origin of the bizarre froghemoth, or how to avoid participating in the ghastly reproductive cycle of the grotesque vargouille.  Dungeon Masters and players will get some much-needed guidance as you plan your next venture, traipsing about some dusty old ruin in search of treasure, lore, and let’s not forget ... dangerous creatures whose horns, claws, fangs, heads, or even hides might comfortably adorn the walls of your trophy room. If you survive.

Research has never been so dangerous!

"This is a great addition to 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. The cutesy banter between Volo and Elminster is kept to a minimum, leaving some really great, meaty content. While I just received my print copy today, I've been using the online version through Roll20 for two weeks. My review is based on two weeks of experience with the content, plus sitting with the physical book today.

What exactly are you getting in this book?

- Nearly 90 pages of in depth monster lore, focusing on Beholders, Giants, Gnolls, Goblinoids, Hags, Kobolds, Mind Flayers, Orcs, and Yuan-ti. This is very in depth work, with multiple pages providing variants, tables, lairs (including maps), historical background, and even some of the psychology of the creatures that can really help you flesh out these types of creatures in your games.

- 7 new Player Character races, including Aasimar, Firbolg, Goliath, Kenku, Lizardfolk, Tabaxi, and Triton. These are a nice edition, and I especially like how the details for these new races includes tips on how to role-play as these slightly more unique creature types. Overall, these new races feel like they can breathe a lot of new life into campaigns for players who might be starting to get tired of the standard set from the Player's Handbook.

- 6 new Monstrous Player Character races, which feature groups that were represented in the first 90 pages. These are more limited/specialized builds that a DM would really need to weigh before including in a game, but absolutely could provide some fantastic adventures for the right group of players. The 6 Monstrous races represented are Bugbear, Goblin, Hobgoblin, Kobold, Orc, and Yuan-ti Pureblood.

- An expanded Bestiary. The next 99 pages of the book are dedicated to new monsters for your games. There are an excellent variety of new creatures, including some favorites that didn't make the original Monster Manual. Personally, I was glad to see a nice balance between creature types, and that these new creatures help round out some of the groups, such as Fey. It also is nice to see a book like this deepen the bench; this section of the book provides an especially large amount of new monsters of the type covered in the first 90 pages (Beholders, Giants, Gnolls, Goblinoids, Hags, Kobolds, Mind Flayers, Orcs, and Yuan-ti). A full 10 pages of this is also used to create new NPC stats, which is a great boon to be able to build encounters that stretch across a wider CR level in more civilized locations.

- The book wraps up with 4 pages of Appendixes which provide a quick reference no matter how you are looking for a creature: you can find them by CR level, by Creature Type, or by the typical environment that you would find the monster in.

All in all, the content is incredibly useful for any dungeon master who wants more content. The new monsters alone are worth the price of admission. The new character races are also an excellent new addition, although their uniqueness may make them more useful for some groups over others; that said, options are always nice to have. The first 90 pages of lore will be most useful to DM's who are planning on using the types of creatures listed in their campaigns. Especially if you are using those creature types, I highly recommend this as an addition to your collection, as the amount of material provided on these creatures is sure to spark your imagination and spin new adventures for your table."

Volo Guide to Monsters Dungeons Dragons Wizards RPG Team 0090125919707 Books Reviews

  • Volo's Guide To Monsters is now, without a doubt, my new favorite 5E book. Part 1 contains a LOT of in-depth information about some of D&D's most notable adversaries Beholders, Giants, Mind Flayers, and others. The second part contains new racial options for players; IIRC, some of these were presented in other books, but it is nice to have them collected in one place. The rest of the book has a bestiary of new creatures, great and small, as well as some "plug and play" NPCs.

For the DM, this book is a treasure trove; I tend to buy 5E books for inspiration, and don't really play pre-generated campaigns, and VGtM is helping me take the campaign I'm running in some exciting new directions (at least, for me). Also, I'm all about giving players more options, so the new player races are also extremely interesting to me. I don't know how much I'll use the pre-gen NPCs, but they're handy to have, just in case.

One of my favorite things about the book is the chief conceit of its design. Peppered throughout the book are comments of Volothamp Geddarm (the "Volo" of the title) and the archmage Elminster Aumar. These little side notes add a lot to the flavor of the book, and help the reader immerse him/herself in the world.

EDIT Another thing I like about this book that I just discovered is that the index of the book has monsters sorted by challenge rating and sorted by location. So, if you're hunting for creatures in, say, the Underdark, it's extremely easy to find them in the book. Nice addition!

  • The book is laid out in 3 section with the first section giving the DM insight into the a number of different monster races such as Beholders, Giants, Gnolls, Goblin races, Mind Flayers and Yuan-Ti. The next section gives several new player races such as Aasimar, Goliath, Lizardfolk, Tabaxi and my new favorite the Kenku. While the last section has stats for a bunch of new monsters related to the races detailed in the front of the book and some new NPC types. As with all Wizard of the Coast books the art work is great. I really like the Monster Lore section, I used the Goblinoid background to expand the Hobgoblin Empire and Yuan-Ti's that I was using already using in my campaign. I also like some of the insights like monster tactics. This is a great book for your D&D library and I hope future editions will expand out some of the other races that couldn't make this edition.
  • Arrived today in absolutely perfect condition, I’ve noticed a few negative reviews here and there and think it’s less of a knock on Wizard’s of the Coast & , and more of a case of in unluck of the draw.

For the book itself, content wise, I love the new races even if they are a little on the basic side design wise (I felt they could’ve spaced them out better and made each new race page closer to players handguude layout where you have a big gorgeous illustration followed by their name in big print spaced out away from the next races, instead it reads with slightly bigger print, illustrations sometimes on the next page, all sort of run into one another. In short, it’s somewhere between a strait up list and what the player handbook does with the core races. Maybe that’s a minor complaint but that did bother me, enough to write this blurb.)

Otherwise, still very happy with this book and happy to have it in my collection.

Around the World in 80 Food Trucks Lonely Planet eBook Lonely Planet Food Reviews

  • With competition free intent and appreciation, I acknowledge that this purchase of the kindlebook Around the World in 80 Food Trucks by Lonely Planet Food is indirectly/creatively inspired by the influence of my current job and creatively inspired by both positive experiences of eating some food from various food trips before especially with my angelic husband. I am able to already view this kindlebook because of the help of some affiliated employees. Some of the following details in this kindlebook fried poultry recipe from the Mother Clucker food truck of London UK, a pizza recipe with asparagus from London UK, some unique French toast recipe from Belgium, some buttermilk fried poultry sandwiches from Berlin Germany, and more.
  • Around the World in 80 Food Trucks is a fascinating look into a worldwide cultural phenomenon. There are food trucks pictured on six continents and in any number of countries. Actually, there are over 160 pages of photos and text with each food truck receiving two pages.

The first impression that we get is that the trucks are everywhere. They do have wheels after all. Many of the vehicles provide food that is exotic to their locations. There are Pad Thai Noodles in the UK, Butter Paneer Masala in Australia, and Pork Souvlaki in New York. There are also many trucks providing local specialties Keema Pav in Mumbai, Sea Bass Ceviche in Seville, and my favorite, the Super Cheddar Burger in Budapest.

Food Trucks presents its subject on several levels. First, there are the trucks in their multicolored varieties. Then there is the most notable culinary delight sold by each of the subject trucks. There is biographical information on the proprietors of the trucks. These people are often pictured with their creations. The payoff is that there is a recipe provided for each of the notable food treats.

This is not really a guide book in the classic sense of Lonely Planet guides. I do not think that Lonely Planet has provided us with the delightful book so that we can travel the planet looking for each truck, although that would be fun. The vehicles can be followed on their Instagram or Twitter accounts. The recipes serve as a substitute for in situ partaking of the trucks' offerings. We can all make these meals at home. On the other hand, three of the featured food trucks can be found in nearby (to me) New York City. That can be a starting point.
  • I’ve read this book cover to cover several times now. In a world where there’s so much divisiveness and acrimony one of the things that brings us together is food. A fairly new trend is the food truck and they’re popping up all over the world. They’re informal, fun and affordable. Even some high end chefs are trying their hand with purveying high end street food. It sounds like an oxymoron but it’s here, it’s now and it’s good. Very, very good.

The writers and editors of this Lonely Planet book have somehow traveled the world and talked the recipes out of many truck chefs and are sharing them in this edition. I was so delighted to see the international flair that’s come to be expected from these trucks here in the United States has traveled to all parts of the globe.

    • You can find Pad Thai Noodles and Great Balls of Fire Meatballs in the UK
    • Indian Style Poutine in Berlin
    • Hawaiian Shrimp in Japan
    • How about Carolina Pulled Pork in Australia
    • I’ve made The Fonz Toastie recipe from a truck in Melbourne
    • The Peruvian Sacha Taco truck can be found in, well, Peru
    • The recipe that really got my taste buds dreaming is for Polpo alla Griglia served on a Portland truck

The book lists Facebook, Instagram and/or websites of most of these food trucks. If you’re a foodie or know one, this is the book to get. This is a 99 star book but unfortunately I can only give it 5.
  • Beautiful book heavily illustrated with photos. The first page I opened to contained a recipe for "Braised Emu." I thought the jig was up! But that's about as wild as the recipes get. Most are for recognizable dishes like tacos, burgers, cheese spreads, cakes and flan. Of course, they all have a twist of some sort. For me, some of the ingredients lists are daunting -- long and containing unusual or expensive items like juniper berries, white truffle oil, tapioca flour, dang myun noodles and minty raita. But many contain ordinary meats, vegetables, spices and pantry items. In fact, that's one of the reasons this cookbook doesn't really interest me. I don't need more recipes for waffles, tacos, burgers, fried chicken and cake. The preparation instructions are actually short and uncomplicated -- I guess you can't mess around too much in a food truck. The stories of the individual food truck owners are mildly interesting. I'm not sure how many or how long food trucks survive, so as a travel guide to food trucks, this book might not be that useful.
  • My son has become a huge Food Network fan, watching things from all the Guy's shows to baking championships. We like seeing some of the different things people do, but we still are in a rut for what I make at home.

Being a single father, it's tough finding time to do more than the typical easy stuff we've worked into our "food schedule" even if we'd like variety. So we've been grabbing a few things like this book, to find alternatives and things to pull us out of the rut, and out of my comfort zone some.

Plenty of options in here for things neither of us has ever had or tried. Layout is good, and recipes are detailed.

I wish there were more photos of the FOOD though - plenty of photos of people's trucks and the people, but some of the dishes have no picture of the food at all. For people like us, those photos are critical for us to be able to look through and try to find something that looks like it would appeal to us.

Powerhouse is the first book on the singular life and career of American architect Judith Chafee (1932-1998). Chafee was an unrepentant modernist on the forefront of sustainable design. Her architecture shows great sensitivity to place, especially the desert landscapes of Arizona. Chafee was also a social justice advocate and a highly respected woman in a male-dominated profession. After graduating from the Yale University Architecture School, where her advisor was Paul Rudolph, she went on to work in the offices of legends including Rudolph, Walter Gropius, Eero Saarinen, and Edward Larrabee Barnes. In addition to her architectural legacy, her decades of teaching helped shape a generation of architects. Chafee's drawings and archival images of her work are complemented by stunning photography by Ezra Stoller and Bill Timmerman.

Grumpy Cat YearinABox YearinABox 0680392741981 Books Reviews

  • Some of these are hilarious and other days are just ..meh (but that's to be expected with a daily calendar, I understand it's hard to write over 300 genuinely funny grumpy cat memes). I'm sad to say my main issue with this is the quality of it. A little piece of the black plastic stand piece broke off right away and now the stand refuses to stay in place, so my calendar keeps falling over. Also don't love the quality of the paper. Sort of like magazine pages. Unless I tear it just right, the pages tend to rip into multiple pieces when I try to remove them. Which is sad because I like to save the good ones. So that's why this calendar is just "ok" in my opinion.
  • If you like Grumpy, you'll like this. My husband thinks that the captions are better written this year. I love this little cat and every day it cheers me "down" (ha ha) to tear off a new leaflet and see her cute face and read her Grumpy wisdom.
  • Actually, if you DON’T like this calendar, go away! Grumpy Cat does not disappoint. The pages don’t tear away as nicely as previous years’ calendars, but, as Grumpy Cat would say, “I don’t care.” A great purchase that might brighten your dull, pathetic life.
  • It’s ok, jokes aren’t as funny as the first Grumpy Cat calendar but there are quite a few gems in there. Paper and photo qualities are good
  • Got this for my daughter. She shares the comments with her co workers who stop by her desk to see what grumpy cat has to say.
  • Love it! The calendar is hilarious. Unfortunately the box was smashed on one side and this was a Christmas gift.
  • Hilarious. I got this as a gift for someone for Christmas and I ended up buying one for me. Pretty cute.
  • This daily calendar makes us laugh out loud on the daily. We love Tarder Sauce.
